About Soul Music

Soul music is a genre which originated in the united states during the 1950s and 1960s and combined elements of rhythm and blues, jazz and gospel music. During the period of the african-american civil rights movement of the 1950s and 1960s, the music being released by record labels such as motown, atlantic and stax became highly influential and soul music would become very popular in the united states. The genre is characterised by its use of catchy rhythms, soulful vocals and its call and response technique between the soloist and chorus.
